Superintendent aims to eliminate suspensions disparities by 2018

Beginning Monday, Minneapolis Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson’s leadership team will review every suspension of a black, Latino or Native American student for nonviolent behavior as part of an effort to eliminate disproportionate suspension rates by 2018.

It’s the latest step Minneapolis Public Schools has taken to reduce suspensions for students of color. Black students are suspended at a rate 10 times higher than their white counterparts, the district reports.
