The first of the Vikings stadium’s five giant glass doors has arrived at the construction site.
The massive doors will be placed on the west side of the stadium, providing views of the city’s skyline. They will be the largest operable doors in the world, according to stadium planners.
“The operable doors are one of the most interesting architectural aspects of the new stadium. There is nothing like it in the world,” said Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA). “These large operable doors will be a signature feature of our stadium and provide a sweeping view of downtown Minneapolis, and bring daylight into our space.”
The first door to arrive at the site is 93 feet tall and weighs 57,000 pounds. The doors will range in height from 95 feet to 75 feet.
In other stadium news, M.A. Mortenson Company has filed an application for mediation with the MSFA to reconcile a dispute over about $15 million in stadium construction costs.
Stadium construction is more than 50 percent complete with an opening planned for July 2016.
